Starting from Higashi-Narita Station, they toured the countryside and met directly with local business owners who are actively working to revitalize their communities.

The program was organized and coordinated by Mr. Taiyo Miura of Trinity Nest, a company experienced in running regional study tours. After previously planning and leading tours in Fukushima, Mr. Miura developed a program unique to the Kujukuri area of Chiba, which led to this event.

Mr. Kyi Thu Shein, a Myanmar-born entrepreneur who launched a business in Japan and brought the group together, explained the appeal: “I felt there was great potential in the satoyama landscapes just 30 minutes from Narita Airport.” That balance of accessibility from the Tokyo metropolitan area and rich local resources is why the Tako–Sosa region was chosen.

In the morning, the group departed from Higashi-Narita Station and first visited Iidaka Temple (Iidaka Danrin) in Sosa City. Once the largest Buddhist academic center in the Kanto region during the Edo period, the site gave participants a sense of the area’s long-standing culture of learning.

They then visited Cafe Dining Plant, which opened last year near Yokaichiba Station. There, Naoko Kigawa—who focuses on dishes made with local ingredients and koji—led an onigiri (rice ball) workshop.

In the afternoon, the group moved to Tako Town to visit Tako no Hoshi Campground and its adjoining Hikari Terrace. At an onigiri café renovated from a traditional house, they had the chance to speak with the owner, Ms. Tatsuo Arai. One participant, Ms. Swe, reflected, “I could really feel the passion of everyone working to improve their community.”

Their final stop was Iyashi no Sato Funwari, where they experienced a form of self-care bodywork.

Mr. Kyi Thu Shein commented, “Anyone can visit tourist spots, but it’s rare to have the chance to connect with local business owners on a personal level. Being able to feel like I now have friends in Chiba—that’s the most valuable part of this experience.”

Looking back on the program, Mr. Miura explained, “It was designed around three themes: learning, satoyama, and healing, so participants could truly experience the people building businesses in these rural areas.”

He added that preparations are underway to hold similar programs regularly in Chiba. “Rather than focusing on tourist destinations, we want to create opportunities for people to meet and connect personally with those who are making a difference in their communities.”

This is a repost of a Kujukuri Economic News article in English.
